なぜ、小児は新型コロナウイルスで重症化しにくいか。成人とは異なる免疫学的反応を発見。

　SARS-CoV-2が引き起こす新型コロナウイルス感染症（COVID-19）は、小児では成人と比較して重症化しにくいことがわかっています。新型コロナウイルスが有し重症化と関係すると考えられているタンパク質（ORF3dおよびORF8）は、近縁のウイルスが持っていない特徴的なタンパク質です。本研究では、新型コロナウイルスに感染した小児と成人における、これらのタンパク質に対する免疫反応を詳細に比較しました。その結果、小児では、成人と比較してORF3dおよびORF8に対し、多くの抗体を生産する強い免疫反応を示すことが認められました。このことが、小児において重症化が起こりにくくなる理由であると考えられました。今後、ORF3dおよびORF8を標的にした診断法のさらなる展開や治療薬の開発が期待されます。
　本研究は、石川県立大学 生物資源工学研究所の森正之准教授と香港大学医学部パスツール研究所らのグループにより行われました。
