日本菌学会賞は菌学領域の学術研究あるいは応用技術研究に優れた業績を挙げた研究者に対する賞であり、受賞となった研究課題は「植物寄生性バッカクキン科菌類の分類と生態に関する研究」です。
受賞理由は、農業など産業上重要な菌を多く含む植物寄生性バッカクキン科菌類について、詳細な形態学的研究や分子系統解析に基づく分類学的な貢献があったこと、これらの菌類の進化生態学的な新知見を明らかにしたこと、感染生態を解明したことなど広範な業績を挙げたことです。
