大沼賞は、「長年にわたる観測データの集録など雪氷に関する地道な貢献を行ったものなど」に贈られる賞です。
小川さんは、白山山頂付近にある千蛇ヶ池雪渓の長期モニタリングをおこない、本雪渓の面積や体積に減少トレンドが表れていること、雪面における熱収支の観測結果から、ある天候条件になる頻度に応じて年ごとの雪渓の大きさに違いが生じることなどを明らかにしました。
これらの研究成果は、わが国の山岳雪氷圏の変動の理解や高山生態系の将来予測に貢献することが期待されます。
